What was the soundtrack of your year? Of your life? Which songs most strongly represent the various eras of your life? What songs were playing for the most crucial, formative moments of your life? Or, if the chronological approach doesn’t work for you, which songs best capture the different facets of your life? (Childhood, Love Life, Adulthood, Loss, Growth, Career, Happiness, Sadness, etc.) Â Please elaborate.
Here we go again. My handicap for remembering song titles and writers is gonna bite me in the butt one more time. It also doesn’t help that songs don’t often speak to me in terms of the time or situation they are played. Music speaks to me in terms of it’s harmonies and whether or not I can reasonably belt it at the top of my lungs. There has to be at least a few songs that speak for some parts of my life. Hmm, let’s see… (if you see smoke, call the fire dept…)
Just about any Duran Duran song, even the new ones, remind me of my early teen age years. I used to spend my evenings hanging out in my bedroom, my turn-table armed with my favorite DD LP’s (I’m dating myself, aren’t I…). I’m still surprised that my parents didn’t kick me to the curb with my blaring music and Loud.As.I.Possibly.Can singing. Perhaps they had earplugs? I spent so much time daydreaming listening to those songs, usually consisting of running away with lead singer Simon LeBon or whoever the crush of the moment was. Ahhh to be young again…
Thinking of 2011 doesn’t generate any references to popular music, but rather to rhythmic drums and chanting. This year was full of spiritual revelations and experiences. Memories of falling asleep to 50+ drums, meaningful rituals and new insights into myself, my community and my world, both positive and not-so-positive, swim through my head. My hope is to continue this journey into 2012.
If you could go on a trip regardless of cost, where would you go and what would you see?
Very simply (since cost is no issue), I’d go everywhere. Because really, why limit yourself to one location if money is of no concern? Places that would be of personal interest include Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Italy, France. But from there I would just go from place to place as the wind takes me (and my family of course, because it wouldn’t be the same without them).
What is your “one word”? One word for this year, one word for next year.
Last year (2011) “Enlightening”. This year? “Mysteries”. Last year opened my eyes to many things, but I’m convinced there are experiences out there that I’m meant to have, but they are completely unknown to me. As I pursue my spiritual path, I’m looking forward to learning those things that cannot be taught by book and classroom, but by experiencing. It’s a leap I can’t wait to take!
